Below is our Wine of The Week!
Bob Foley is one of the most respected and talented winemakers in California. Bob started his career at Heitz Cellars, moving on to Markham and then Pride Mountain as those wineries’ first winemaker. He retired from Pride in 2006 to devote full time to his own winery and consulting projects. Bob’s wines are known for their big flavors, aromatic density and great balance. Caves and a winery have been constructed at the Foley “compound” in the Howell Mountain area of Napa. Bob was named Food & Wine Magazine’s 2007 Winemaker of the Year and has appeared on the cover of and in numerous articles in Wine Spectator and other wine and food periodicals. Bob was also the 2005 Tête de Cuvée honoree of the Côtes du Coeur American Heart Association charity event in Dallas. In addition to wine, Bob is attuned to popular rock music; he plays lead guitar and is the lead singer and songwriter for The Robert Foley Band.
2009 Robert Foley Charbono $39.99
Tasting Notes: This vineyard was originally planted in the 1880’s by the Heitz family with cuttings from the Savoie region in France. The wine is inky dark purple with grape berry jam and vanilla flavors, a big mid-palate, and a lingering finish clad in soft, silky tannins.
2008 Robert Foley Claret 96RP $109.99
Tasting Notes: The 2008 Claret (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) has that ethereal nose of spring flowers, boysenberry, blueberry, black currant, and spice. Following that seductive aromatic display, Foley’s brilliance is again exhibited in the mouthfeel of this seamless wine, which has full-bodied flavors, no hard edges, gorgeous layers of fruit, and loads of complexity already, but is still a youthful wine with its best days ahead of it. This is brilliant winemaking, as some of us have come to expect from Bob Foley, and it should age well for 15-20 years. – Robert Parker
