I’ve met a lot of winemakers in my days as a sommelier, but no one comes close to the energy and enthusiasm of Greg Brewer. He is thrilled by the slope of each vineyard block, the cools winds that form the most perfect micro-climates in the Santa Rita Hills; he can’t wait to share his thoughts on stem inclusion in his pinot noirs, and on the oak treatments for his Chardonnay. All in all, he is a wine geek’s dream for a winemaker visit, and I took full advantage of our meeting last week!
Greg helped to found, map, and establish the AVA of Santa Rita Hills- He has worked in the wine industry for 25 years, founding Brewer Clifton in 1996 and Melville wines in 1997. He is incredibly passionate about the region he helped to find and continues to work as a consultant helping other wineries get their start.
He shared some killer new projects that he’s working on and for a man whose career has been based in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay- his newest wine release, Ex Posto Facto, is one of the finest domestic Syrahs I have tasted in recent memory. This wine was balanced with the incredible meaty and smoky bouquet blended with just-ripe blackberries on the nose that follows into a palate that is a savory as it is luscious with white pepper, lavender, and huckleberries swirled with sweet tobacco. Holy cow- this wine got me excited! For only $44.99, you should be excited too!
