Ivan Thornton of Grape Passion joined us Friday night for a killer line up of selections from his portfolio. Ivan is a long time member of Graileys and a passionate collector and advocate for California wines- he founded his company Grape Passion in 2008 in an attempt to bring his favorite wines from California to his home state of Texas!
We started with the 2015 Solomon Hills Chardonnay from the esteemed Santa Maria Valley- the wine was beautifully balanced with bright refreshing acidity and tropical fruits like mango and pineapple with lemon curd- yum!
Next we moved on to a stunning release from Bien Nacido Vineyards also located in the Santa Maria Valley- “The Captain” is the Reserve Pinot Noir release from the Miller family who have owned Bien Nacido Vineyards since 1969. The wine was a beautiful balance between ripe rich red fruits like strawberry and pomegranate and fresh tilled earth and graphite. It immediately calls out quality from the first scent of the bouquet.
As the surprises continued, we next moved into our magnum of the evening- Two Worlds Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Bob Egelhoff and Two Hands Bella’s Garden Shiraz. It was the 2010 release and was drinking so young even with 8 years of age! Juicy and delicious- with only 500 etched magnums made this was the steal of the night!
Moving into the California Cabernets, which Ivan is well known for, we started with Aftermath. New to Ivan’s portfolio, this wine presents an amazing price to quality ratio- big fruit, big structure, this wine is a no brainer for California Cabernet lovers, especially at $79.99!
It’s fall in Texas, which means it’s time for the newest Cabernet Releases- including Gargiulo! We absolutely love the wines from this property and were so excited to taste the 2015 Money Road Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon alongside our members for the very first time. This was the wine of the night! Gorgeous wine with dark rich fruits and the touch of mocha and cocoa nib that we have all come to know and love from the Gargiulo property had us swooning.
4 Winds Winery is another new addition to the Grape Passion portfolio, and a new staple on Graileys shelves! Thomas Rivers Brown partners with Jim Barbour to create an elegant juicy and silky Cabernet ready to drink now!
All in all, it was a fantastic Friday night at Graileys full of laughter and libations! We can’t wait to see you at our next tasting next Friday September 28th when we host Jonathan Nicholson of Vintus Wines where he shares some of his favorite French and Italian wines from their portfolio.
