A legendary evening was held at Graileys Friday night. We hosted Master Sommelier and COO of Colgin Cellars Paul Roberts in an incredible Master Class tasting of the wines of Colgin. Side by side with their 2015 Releases, we enjoyed 2010 Tychson Hill, 2009 Cariad, 2006 IX Estate Cabernet, and 2005 IX Syrah! Wow, oh, wow- these wines were amazing!
Paul shared with us what makes each of these locations so special, and even some techniques used in the vineyards. Namely, that during difficult vintages they go through the vineyards and clip off individual grapes that don’t make the cut! Paul joked that while some may say Colgin is too expensive, he would argue with practices like these, Colgin is not expensive enough!
Above all, he pressed upon us the most important qualities for the wines of Colgin to have are: Perfume, Freshness, and Minerality. And that is what made, at least to this writer, their 2015 wines so spectacular, and so unique to the many other 2015 Cult Cabernet Releases we have tried this year. While so many wines need 7-10 years to show anything beyond the fresh ripe fruits of Napa Valley, these current releases from Colgin had a freshness that so perfectly melded with the minerality of these wines- and a perfume that was truly intoxicating. Many of us couldn’t take our first sip, as we were so enthralled with the bouquet of the wine that it was just as enjoyable to smell the wine as it was to drink it!
It was a very special evening, one that I am sure we will not see again for a long time- but, it is Graileys, so you never really know what’s going to come next!
