Graileys is no stranger to epic California Cabernet, but when Ivan “The Fiver” Thornton, and Daniel Ha showed up with the complete line up of wines from Helianthus and Futo for an even tasting at the club we felt our hearts swell and beat a little faster!
With side by side vintages of Helianthus, it was great to see the talent of Futo winemaker Jason Exposto and Tom Futo’s daughter Jessica Futo. They found a vineyard in Atlas peak and make this wine completely separate from the family’s other wine production. Each vintage has been released to great acclaim, and the wines are approachable to drink now while you’re waiting for your Futo’s to come of age!
Then we moved onto the Futo releases- beginning with the 2015 OV/SL we see the family take their individual land holdings in Oakville (OV) and Stag’s Leap District (SL), and combine the two to make a lovely brash wine with riper red raspberries and plums. A delicious wine with incredible finish- drinking well now with 15 years ahead of it!
Next we moved onto the 2015 Futo 5500 which sources fruit from their Stags Leap vineyard, and was truly explosive on the evening on our tasting. I couldn’t get enough of the wine full of thyme, sage, mocha, and baked plums alongside spiced Mexican Chocolate and Tobacco- wow this wine was great!
The final wine in the evening’s line up was the Futo latest vintage of their first labeled release, 2015 OV, The Oakville property is a renowned piece of land producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon on the valley. This wine was huge- Brambly dark fruits and blackberries on the vine entwined with fresh rolled tobacco leaves and sweet holiday baking spices. These wines are a beautiful representation of quality in Napa Valley- and will continue to age
