Fred Dame is the OG- the Original Gangster of Master Sommeliers. He is the man who brought the Court of Master Sommeliers to the Americas and thus has spawned generations of wine professionals following dutifully and passionately in his wake. He is a personal friend and mentor- a man who has inspired many anxious moments in testing, and even more moments of joy!
He joined us on Friday evening in support of his newest venture- a winery he came out of retirement to join as Global Ambassador of Daou Winery. They are an incredible project out of Paso Robles founded just over 10 years ago- like Graileys! The specialize in Bordeaux Varieties planted high on a mountain now known as Daou Mountain in incredible clay soils in a perfect climat that is just cool enough to protect the grapes from the traditionally over-ripe high alcohol wines of the region.
The Daou brothers were born in Lebanon and forced to flee as a result of the civil war- they moved to the South of France which is were they first fell in love with wine. Both brilliant students, they studied engineering at University of San Diego and settled in California as they founded their communication company that put them on the map.
Daniel Daou is a self-taught winemaker who manages the entire production- both brothers are incredibly hands on and are committed to making great wines with balance that can age for years or be enjoyed now.
Fred was a joy to have - you can see in his face and hear in his words how happy and inspired he is in his new role - we were so happy to host him and so pleased to be able to taste such a delicious group of wines!
