The other night we were joined by some of our earliest members - looking for a way to beat the heat! Dr.E comes out swinging with 2007 Marcassin Three Sisters Vineyard from the Sonoma Coast. I don't know what to say about Marcassin without the fear of run-on sentences and too many exclamation points- except to say, this producer has defied tradition and in that action Helen Turley and her husband have created arguably the most incredible Pinot Noir and CHardonnay in California from their 20 acres in the Russian River Valley. Impossible to find, and even rarer to taste- this was a real treat! This wine was gorgeous at 11 years of age- tightly wound still with striking minerality, lots of nectarine, orange, and lemon blossom, huge body, great fruit, and a finish that wouldn’t quit- lasting easily over 40 seconds! This is a sensational wine with lots of brightness and freshness.
Dr. S is inspired by the selection and brings out Maybach’s 2014 Eterium Chardonnay from the hillside vineyard of B. Thieriot on the Sonoma Coast a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. Warm days, brisk nights and deep loamy soil provide this coastal site with ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay naturally high in acidity. Excited to taste- we were bowled over by the nose and palate; mineral and floral qualities redolent of White Burgundy are met with an undeniably Californian personality rich with notes of stone fruit, hay, nuts and lime blossom.
Well, Simon had to get in on the action as well, and came strolling out of the cellar holding none other than Peter Michael’s 2014 Ma Belle Chardonnay- a perfect example of lush vibrant Knight’s Valley Chardonnay- caramelized citrus along with honeysuckle lead this wine with fresh Meyer lemons on the palate keeping this wine fresh, unctuous and focused. A must try.
In all it was a fascinating study in California’s top Chardonnay producers! A variety that leads the world of white wine shows its many colors even within a few vineyard sites in California. A captivating snapshot - I can’t wait to see what the next Chardonnay Showdown brings!
