Tuesday night was an epic evening at Graileys. I struggle to find words to capture the excitement, thrill, and joy I felt upon learning we were to host Phillipe Guigal- Grandson of Etienne, Son of Marcel- 3rd generation in a line of winemakers that have defined the Rhone Region. We designed a tasting to share the most current releases from Guigal, and our members enjoyed a stunning tasting including La Doriane Condrieu, Chateau de Nalys- the new Chateauneuf du Pape project from Guigal, Chateau de Ampuis, and a side-by-side comparative tasting of 2014 and 2015 La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque!
Hearing Philippe speak about the vineyards that make up the wines I so dearly love was incredible. He spoke of the La Mouline - just a hectare in size with 11% Viognier planted to the terraced vineyards, it is the “elegant, the expressive, the romantic” vineyard of the three. Of the La Turque he says: “the way to find La Turque in a blind tasting is through the spice” and my oh my, he is right- this wine with 93% syrah and 7% Viognier is sexy, showy, and dramatic- this wine brings the heat and raises your pulse. Last we speak of La Landonne, a vineyard Marcel Guigal planted upon the birth of Phillipe back in 1973. Just two-point-three hectares of pure, powerful Syrah. This wine is the warrior, the race horse, it is a wine of strength and brute force. They use 100% syrah and 100% stem inclusion ensuring this is a wine for aging 50 years or more!
This was an event I won’t forget for many years to come. WOW!!!!
