Girls just want to have fun! Especially true for our female members at Graileys, we had an epic ladies night in which some quality juice got opened alongside some quality laughs! We began the evening knowing we wanted some older Bordeaux- what better than the illustrious 1967 Latour? Head and shoulders above the other first growths, the 1967 Latour defied the vintage and gave keen collectors great quality and value. The bouquet on this most recent bottle was complex, classic and wide open immediately upon opening. Wafting from the glass in a fine, meaty blend of cassis, black cherries, cigar ash, gravel, black truffles, cigar smoke and a nice touch of coffee bean in the upper register. On the palate the wine was deep, still full bodies, and just oh so suave on the finish. We couldn’t get enough.
When finished, we knew we couldn’t top our aged Bordeaux so we went with something a touch younger- 2000 Haut Brion. Wow! Like a Labrador puppy, this wine is young, ostentatious, and eager to please! Compelling and dense, the nose is simply breathtaking - quintessential Haut-Brion with ebullient red berry fruit, roasted herbs, gravel, terracotta tiles on a warm summer's day...it is simply wave after wave of intoxicating scents. The palate displays heavenly balance, pitch-perfect acidity, and sexy full spices. What depth and dimension in this outstanding wine!
Having climbed to new heights, our ladies weren’t ready to get off this ride! It was time for bubbles! The recently released 2008 Cristal Rose was the perfect bottle to complete the evening’s trifecta of awesome! This was a perfectly ripe, round, luscious and mouth-filling Champagne with power and concentration as well as a crystalline, elegant precision and stunning, citrusy freshness. So intense and fruity, intertwining red berry and sweet cherry aromas swim with floral flavors and a touch of caramel and nuts. This is a wine that I just couldn’t get enough of- perfection in a glass and the perfect way to end the evening.
As Queen B says - Who runs the world? GIRLS!
