Passionate and visionary, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta gave birth to Sassicaia, (place of stones) a revolutionary wine at the outset, which has become an Italian icon rivaling the most prestigious wines anywhere in the world. From 1948 to 1967, the production of Sassicaia was reserved for the family's private consumption, but Rocchetta realized that over time, the wine developed gracefully and evolved exponentially, lending it a unique structure and an aromatic profile of great and intense finesse. Wishing to refine the quality of his wine even further, Mario was advised by his cousin Piero Antinori, a descendant of the illustrious wine merchant family, and by oenologist Giacomo Tachis famed for his groundbreaking wines Tignanello and Solaia. The first vintage was unveiled to the general public in 1968, and the wine surprised as much as it fascinated, galvanizing international critics into the realization that a major new player (and genre) had appeared on the scene. Since then, each release of a new vintage of Sassicaia is an event for collectors of the greatest Italian wines.
